Pirate Sink or Float

I usually do this activity the first week of school, but we didn't get to it!  Instead, we did it this week, and the kids loved it!  I read the book Will the Boat Sink or Float?, (Sorry, I must have deleted the picture of the book, but it is on an earlier post!) discussed it, predicted what items would sink or float, and then performed the experiment.  They did a fantastic job following directions, making predictions, and recording their experiment.

They each had a foam pirate ship that I made.  They predicted whether it would sink or float,  recorded their hypothesis, and then tested it.  I gave them each a little foam square that we pretended was a treasure box and did the same thing.  Then they tested how many treasure boxes would sink their pirate ship.

They are also given a gold coin, a little lego pirate, and an eye patch.    They would either call out sinkers or floaters.  I had one little boy that kept calling them stinkers instead of sinkers! LOL

Hopefully, this week we will be able to do our color mixing experiment!
