More Pumpkin Fun!

     Usually, I do pumpkin centers similar to the way I do apple centers, but this year I did it a little differently.  Instead of each child bringing in a pumpkin of their own, we did one class pumpkin to fill out our pumpkin investigation books.    

We guessed how many cubes tall our pumpkin was and then we measured and recorded in our books.  We also measure the pumpkin with string, but the pictures did not take.  I had one student that almost guessed it exactly right!

We predicted whether or pumpkin would sink or float.  Our pumpkin floated!

This is a great book to use to help introduce estimation, counting by 2's, 5's and 10's.  We read the book and then took a good look at our pumpkin before taking our guesses.  

Then we cut open our pumpkin.  We felt inside the pumpkin and drew a picture of what it looked like. 

We scooped out the pumpkin, cleaned out the seeds, and let them dry over night.  The next morning we  counted the seeds and recorded our answers. Our pumpkin had 566 seeds!

I found this pumpkin brace map and did this with the class to help them learn the parts of a pumpkin.

We labeled each part after putting it on our paper.

I found this on Pinterest and just had to do this for our Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater Nursery Rhyme!  These turned out so cute!!!!  The idea originally came from garden of praise blog.

We made bat books to help us learn our -at word family.

     Our Five Little Pumpkin poems were so cute, but that was another picture that did not turn out.  Tomorrow I'll have pictures up from our super fun Halloween Centers!

Some Pumpkin Fun

     Our schedule has been way off the past two weeks because of early release days, conferences, pictures, and Fall Festival!  Whew!  That makes me tired just thinking about all of it!  I don't have many pictures because there are so many things that we have started but not completed, and I have been out of the room quite a bit with conferences.  I thought I would put up a few pumpkin activities and save our Fall Festival pictures for Halloween.  Hopefully, Monday I will be able to put up our parts of a pumpkin, pumpkin investigation and our Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater projects.  You have a lot to look forward to! :)

This pictures just makes me laugh! :)  I think she really enjoyed finger painting her pumpkin!  They mixed red and yellow to make orange, painted the pumpkin, and then colored the leaves and stem.

They also put together a sentence. A pumpkin is orange and round.

Pumpkin Glyph

Because of short week last week we had not finished up one of our scarecrow activities.  We are learning about syllables and how many claps are in a word.

Pumpkin Literacy Center-  They pulled letters out of the pumpkin and then matched them to the large pumpkin.  Once they found the matching letter, they marked it on their sheet.  You can get it here.

We read about the life cycle of a pumpkin and then cut out the pieces to make their own.  They painted paper plates orange for the pumpkin and drew on a face to make it a jack-o-lantern.  It did not show up very well in this picture!

Pumpkins- The End

     We had a very short week this week: no school on Monday and a field trip tomorrow.  We wrapped up a few things from last week and had a super short unit on Squirrels & Nuts.  I'm feeling a little stressed because we have to kick in high gear to prepare for our Thanksgiving feast!  Someone please tell me where this year has gone!!!

Letter of the Week

We have been working on a Fall book since the end of  September.  We are almost finished!  You can find the book here.  Michelle at Musings of Me has some awesome free printables!  

We still need to add the sentence with this.  They fingerprinted red and yellow paint to make an orange pumpkin..

This is another page for our Fall book.

We made the paper bag pumpkins for our Fall Festival last week.  We put our scarecrow page in the pumpkin that will go in our book now that the festival is over. :)

We did our pumpkin glyphs last week during centers, but we still needed to analyze our data.

They love working in the floor!  I had this on a chart and then they filled out their own individual pages.

This is one of our class pumpkins Jack.  We read the book Pumpkin Jack (forgot to take a picture of the book!) and now we are going to see what happens to our Pumpkin Jack.

This is our other class pumpkin Bert.  We put soil and water inside of Bert and now we are going to observe what happens.

We are keeping a Science journal of Jack and Bert.

Tomorrow is our field trip, so I will put pictures up from that tomorrow night.  I'll put our Squirrel & Nut activities also up sometime this weekend.  We finally finished our Moses books, so I will also get those up soon!
